Installations of Interest

Customer: P. Sala & Sons Construction, Inc.

  • Site: Vineyard Commons Development, Vineyard LloydLloyd, NY
  • Challenge: Engineers for this new 55+ independent living community needed a reliable and dependable pump station.
  • HNS Solution: HNS proposed an above-grade packaged duplex Smith and Loveless positive prime pump station, equipped with an Omni Site telephone dialer for all alarm conditions and Bio-Organic's Eco Catalyst to eliminate odors, fats, oils and grease. The Eco Catalyst was provided with a Precision Systems packaged fiberglass housing "Stormbox" which included a 15 gallon storage tank, feevineyard stormboxd pump, heater and aerator blower with diffuser. The pump station was delivered to the site as a complete package, ready to install on top of the precast wet well with limited labor required. The Stormbox was delivered ready for installation beside the wet well.

Customer: Viceroy Builders of Horsham, PA

  • Site: WAWA Convenience Store, Tinton Falls, N.J.WAWA Convenience Store
  • Challenge: Development of the property was stalled because the site was not conducive to discharging the anticipated wastewater by gravity. Homes adjacent to the site had also experienced drainage problems. A pumping solution was required to meet NJDEP and local design parameters to allow the wastewater to drain on the site and remediate sewer flow problems of surrounding homes. A standby generator system was also required to provide stand-by power to the wastewater pump station during times of power outages.
  • HNS Solution: HNS suggested a prefabricated fiberglass pump station with attached valve vault that included Ebara Model 50DGFMU62.2 quick disconnect grinder pumps, wet well trash basket, Control Systems Inc. duplex pump with transducer level control, and a Generac 25KW automatic stand-by generator system. A stainless steel hoist for removal of equipment from within the wet well area was also supplied for maintenance purposes.

Because the new store is located at a busy intersection, HNS selected equipment with a very low profile that would be pleasing to the eye for shoppers and neighbors.

The separate attached valve vault design was chosen to provide separation of the collection of wastewater and valves, thus minimizing inspection issues related to operation in a hazardous gaseous area.

HNS recommended the prefabricated pump station concept to eliminate onsite issues associated with construction and the contractor. Because the equipment is fabricated in a controlled setting where the fit and testing of individual components come together, it arrived at the site tested and ready to be installed and started up.

Ask the Expert

Question: What is the correct way to maintain float switches?

Answer: Floats require occasional cleaning to get rid of grease and other debris, so it's important to install them where they can be easily and safely accessed.  You can extend the life of the switch by carefully raising and cleaning the units, regardless of whether you have mercury or mechanical switch types.  When cutting away any debris, be especially careful not to damage the cable.  Any floats with stiffening, softening or bloating of the cable material should be replaced. Avoid dropping or banging the switches when returning the floats to the wet well because they damage easily. Finally, remember that mercury float switches require proper disposal. If possible, return them to the source where you purchased them. Otherwise, bring them to an appropriate hazardous waste disposal location.

People on the Move

Anthony Genovese Anthony Genovese is the newest member of the Hydra-Numatic sales team, working on Outside Sales.  With a BSEE degree and 32 years of experience in the industrial equipment and pump industries, Anthony brings an invaluable combination of market and product expertise to HNS.

"My pump knowledge will assist on all forms of projects in wastewater, industrial, construction and commercial industries," Anthony said, "and being an engineer will allow me to review projects with a different understanding than the typical sales professional."

Anthony's path to HNS began with a position as technical advisor for Weda Pump right out of college. In this hands-on role, he traveled to major construction sites around the U.S. to write up specifications and assist with product planning and training. His career with Weda progressed steadily and at the age of 34, around the time when Weda was acquired by Svedala, he became the first American and youngest manager to head a company for this multi-national Swedish conglomerate.

Later in his career Anthony worked for Stanley Tools, ABS Pumps and Ebara International in a progression of sales and managerial positions. His professional accomplishments include an appointment to a White House committee for industry by Vice President Al Gore and election as Chairman of CPB bureau of CIMA.

Commitment to the customer is one of Anthony's hallmarks. One time he gave up a weekend to travel to the boonies of Texas in response to a customer's panicked phone call that "the dam in Del Rio broke and there's people die'n down there!" After an overnight flight and six-hour car ride, Anthony arrived at the empty site where he discovered that the dam was intact and no one had perished! It turned out the customer just wanted Anthony's help getting the site de-watered so he could save his 200-foot crane. Anthony toiled for 20 hours straight and the grateful customer rewarded him "Texas Style" with a Bell Jet Ranger helicopter back to Houston, a cowboy hat, a big check and the largest steak he has ever seen!

Looking ahead, Anthony concurs that the current economy is the greatest challenge to the water/wastewater treatment industry today. "There are many treatment plants that are undersized and out-dated, however, the funds to upgrade or built new projects are not available," he said. "Fortunately, technology has improved greatly and we can provide better process for less money. This will produce better ROI for towns and a cleaner environment for all of us."

When he's not in the office or busy coaching his sons' U11 and U13 travel lacrosse teams, Anthony enjoys biking, skiing, hiking, photography and reading. He lives in Newtown, CT, with his wife Vincenza and two sons Vincent and Nicholas, ages 9 and 12.
